Learn How to Choose the Right Backpack
March 29, 2019Are you still on the hunt for the perfect backpack that suits you? It’s crucial to know the right size, as an ill-fitting backpack can lead to back and neck discomfort over time. To find the perfect fit, you need to measure your torso and waist length accurately. This article provides an easy guide on how to measure your torso and waist. Additionally, it offers insights on selecting the right backpack based on these measurements.
Measuring Torso Length
Measuring your torso length is a straightforward process.

However, you might need a friend to assist you, as reaching your back on your own can be challenging. Stand upright with your head slightly bent forward.
Step 1 – Ask your friend to locate the small protruding bone at the base of your neck, where both shoulders meet. This is often referred to as the seventh cervical (neck) or C7 vertebra. Your torso length begins from this point.
Step 2 – On both sides of your body, place your hands at the end of your ribcage and slowly slide them down towards your waist (like placing hands on hips). With fingers pointing forward and thumbs pointing backward, visualize an imaginary line connecting both thumbs. We’ll call this the imaginary line.
Step 3 – Using a measuring tape, have your friend measure the length from C7 to the imaginary line between both thumbs. This measurement represents your torso length.
Determining Your Waist Size
The next step is to measure your waist. Since most of the backpack’s weight rests on your waist, it’s essential to choose a backpack that fits well around your waist. However, if you find a backpack that matches your torso length, it often fits your waist as well. Nevertheless, it’s better to double-check and know your waist size.
Step 1 – Place your hands on your waist as described in Step 2 above. Your hands should be above an area known as the iliac crest, where there is a curved bone in your hip.
Step 2 – Take a measuring tape and wrap it around your waist. This line should be slightly above your belt line. Measuring your waist is not the same as finding your pants size.
Using Your Measurements to Choose the Right Backpack Size
Use the measurements above to find the right backpack size. For example, if your torso length is 22 inches (56 cm) and your waist size is 15 inches (38 cm), these are the dimensions you should look for in a backpack.
Adjust the Straps
Most backpacks have adjustable straps. Therefore, try wearing the backpack, then adjust the straps to see if it fits your body. Different companies may have different size standards, so always try the backpack on before purchasing.
Load it Up
You should also fill the backpack with a dummy load or other items to assess its capacity. When backpacking or trekking, you’ll likely carry a heavy load. If the straps hurt your skin or if the backpack sags after loading, consider looking for a sturdier and larger backpack.

Check for Proper Fit
Check for Proper Fit When lifting the backpack, lift both shoulders. Fasten the waist belt and tighten the shoulder straps until snug. After that, the load inside the backpack should feel even and balanced on your torso and back. The crucial thing to ensure is that there are no gaps between your torso and the backpack. If there are gaps, the load accumulates disproportionately in the lower back.
Choosing the Right Backpack
Before selecting a backpack, there are several things to consider. Here’s a brief guide on what to look for before buying a backpack for hiking or school:
Types of Backpacks
There are various types of backpacks to choose from, depending on your needs and where you plan to use them. Some common types include:
Materials
Backpacks are made from different materials. Depending on the purpose and contents of the backpack, you can choose the most suitable material. For example, if you need a school backpack, it doesn’t need to be weather-resistant but should be able to withstand heavy loads. Here are some common materials used in making backpacks:
- PVC fabric
- Nylon
- Canvas
- Polyester fabric
Shape and Size
The shape and size of the backpack are crucial. Once again, you can determine the shape and size based on your intended use.

Size is determined by the capacity you need. The shape is not as critical, but if you plan to hike, you need a backpack that distributes the load evenly and balances it on your back.
